You have to wait for a nuptial flight to be going on, right now pavement ants are having their nuptial flights and try to catch ones with no wings, this means that it has already been mated. Also don’t catch the queens if you lift over a rock and see a bunch of winged ants. If you catch those they have not yet even had their nuptial flight, they are preparing for it. I also have a good identification for you on whether or not you caught a queen or a male. First thing is, males have very tiny heads and still have their wings on, queens on the other hands have bulkier heads with wings scars if she ripped off her wings. She usually has a larger thorax as well. I hope this helps!

Either feeder insects from pet store or found outside but make sure no pesticides are used in your area.

for feeders like these, i get them from the pet store. i also get them from my backyard, but only because i know there arent any pesticides being used around my neighborhood. if there were, it could transfer to my ants.

Rover ants are invasive in the US, so unfortunately they’re not good for the environment here 😔 I’m glad I haven’t been stung by my fire ants before, I heard they’re really itchy too. But lol you enjoy getting stung? 😭

They’re not available anymore I don’t think. However other ant stores I recommend for ants and ant products are: Tarheelants AntsAustralia Stateside Ants Buckeye Myrmecology

You can use a clear straw instead of a test tube to make a test tube setup, or use a container and put a re-water a wet cotton ball every few days or when it dries out.
